I Quit Google to Build a Blogging App with 0 Users

Leaving a stable, well-paying job at one of the world’s most prestigious tech companies to build something from scratch with no users might sound crazy. But that’s exactly what I did. I quit Google to pursue a dream — to build a blogging app that I believed could make a difference. And yes, at the time, it had exactly zero users. But that didn’t deter me. Here’s why I made the leap, the challenges I faced, and what I’ve learned along the way.

The Leap of Faith

Working at Google was a dream come true. I had access to cutting-edge technology, a world-class team, and endless opportunities to learn. But deep down, I always had a burning desire to create something of my own. I wanted to build a product that I was passionate about — a tool that could help bloggers share their voices in a more meaningful way.

For years, I tinkered with the idea of a blogging app that simplifies the process and puts creators first. The more I thought about it, the more convinced I became that I needed to leave the comfort of my corporate role and give it a shot. So, I handed in my resignation and set out on a journey that was as terrifying as it was exciting.

Starting from Zero

When you build something new, especially from scratch, you quickly realize how humbling the experience can be. At Google, I worked on products used by millions of people, but now I had to face the reality that my app had zero users. No sign-ups, no downloads — just an idea and a blank canvas.

But starting from zero taught me resilience. Every feature, every bug fix, every late night spent coding was a step toward building something bigger. Slowly but surely, I began getting feedback, making improvements, and refining the product.

The Challenges Along the Way

Building a product is never as glamorous as it sounds. There were moments of self-doubt, especially when the growth I had envisioned didn’t come as fast as I hoped. Learning to balance the technical side with marketing and user acquisition was another steep learning curve.

But through it all, I kept going because I believed in the mission. I wanted to create a blogging app that would empower writers to express themselves easily, without the distractions or complexities that come with many existing platforms. This belief kept me moving forward, even when progress seemed slow.

What I’ve Learned

  1. Passion Drives Persistence: Passion for the project is what keeps you going, even when things get tough. It’s the fuel that makes long hours and countless setbacks worth it.
  2. Progress Over Perfection: In the early stages, it’s easy to fall into the trap of perfecting every little detail. But the most important thing is to launch, gather feedback, and iterate. Progress beats perfection every time.
  3. Value of a Small Audience: While I didn’t start with a large user base, the feedback from early users has been invaluable. Building a community, even a small one, gives you the insights you need to make a product people actually want to use.
  4. Patience is Key: Building something great takes time. It’s important to stay patient and focused on your long-term vision, rather than getting caught up in immediate results.

Why I’m Still All In

Despite the challenges and the slow start, I’m still fully committed to my blogging app. I’m driven by the idea that I can create a platform that truly makes a difference for creators. And I believe that with persistence, passion, and time, it will grow into something incredible.

Conclusion

I left a comfortable job at Google, a decision that some might find questionable, but I haven’t looked back. The road to building a product from scratch is never easy, but it’s one of the most fulfilling journeys I’ve ever embarked on. And while my app might have started with zero users, I know that every step forward brings me closer to something that can truly make an impact.
